A Short History:
|
Clan Donald is the largest of the Highland Clans. At the height of the clan’s power, they ruled a de facto independent kingdom in the West of Scotland, the Isle of Mann and part of Ireland. Their history is long and storied.
Today Clan Donald members exist everywhere on earth and the clan has branches which are full clans in their own right, yet all loyal to Clan Donald. This puts them in the unique position of being the only clan with a High Chief. The clan branches with Chiefs include Clanranald, Sleat, Glengarry, Antrim, and most recently, Keppoch. Other branches without active chiefs include Glencoe, Dunnyveg, Ardnamurchan, and more. Other clans such as Clan MacAlister are independent clans but also descended from and therefore part of Clan Donald as well.
